In the Republican Party primaries, only registered Republicans were able to vote. In the Democratic Party primaries, Democrats and independents were able to vote.
If no candidate receives more than 50% of the vote in a race with three or more candidates, a runoff election will be held in August. 23.
State significance
Three of Oklahoma’s major statewide offices are on the ballot, including the two Senate seats.
Senator Jim Inhofe is retiring at the end of this year as 13 Republicans are running in crowded primaries to fill his seat. Meanwhile, Senator James Lankford is seeking re-election in 2022. Jackson Lahmer, a staunch election denier, is running against Lankford, criticizing him for voting to ratify the 2020 election. Lankford maintains a solid lead in this race.
In the Oklahoma governor’s race, Kevin Stitt received the endorsement of Donald Trump, which could be a major boost even when faced with millions of dollars in attack ads.
In the Democratic primary, the state’s director of public education, Joy Hofmeister, switched voter registration from Republican in hopes of defeating Stitt in the general election.
